Joplin, Missouri

A new 875,000 sq. ft, seven-story, 260-plus private room hospital replaced the former St. John’s Mercy Regional Medical Center.  In May of 2011, the former hospital was hit directly by an EF-5 tornado, the deadliest tornado in Missouri since 1947.

Almost immediately after the devastating tornado that struck Joplin and the Mercy hospital the decision was made to rebuild at a new location with an emphasis on how to make the building safer and better than before. T. I. E.’s Senior Engineer, Bob Kramer, completed the low voltage systems design, project management, construction administration, and commissioning as part of the Heidman & Associates team.  Low voltage systems included::

• Outside plant infrastructure for redundant service providers

• Backbone cabling for a data center and 28 data rooms and 28 systems rooms

• Horizontal network infrastructure for the hospital network and various patient monitoring systems

• IP based smart/interactive patient television and entertainment system

• Access control and video surveillance for the entire facility

• Parking area emergency telephones with mass notification speakers

• Nurse call and RTLS systems for all patient areas

• Infrastructure for various radio systems including HAM radio for use during emergency events

• Distributed Antenna system to provide interior cell service for up to 5 carriers

• AV systems for various meeting and collaboration spaces throughout the facility.
